In Everyperson, Innocent, Jester, Sage

Maybe I missed my calling as a psychologist, but since I joined the team at Allegory Studios, I have begun seeing the world in archetypes. Stores I frequent; people I meet; ads I see. Just about everything can be aligned with one (or more) of the archetypes. Even apps! Here are some of my favorite apps by archetype.

Apps by the archetype

1. The Innocent App: Doughboy ($0.99; iOS 3.0 or later; JetPack Labs)

Admittedly, I’m hungry as I’m writing this blog entry, but there is something so sweet about that laugh…you know the one: Hee-hee-heeee! This app lets you poke that cute distended tummy to elicit the Doughboy’s famous giggle–an instant zero-calorie pick-me-up– but it also provides you with a recipe box chock-full-o’ dessert ideas in case you are looking for something a little tastier to lift your spirits.

2. The Everyperson App: Tip Calculator (Free; iOS 5.0 or later; Tardent Apps Inc.)

I’m a words girl–and not so good with the numbers. That’s why I love me a tip calculator app! But this one takes tipping to the next level, allowing you to split the check and tip between two people…or between up to 100 people! That’s some dinner outing! It also has settings to factor out the sales tax in your calculation if you so choose, different currencies, rounding options, and more. This is a handy app for anyone who enjoys dining out without enduring a math quiz at the end of the evening.

3. The Sage App: Wolfram Alpha ($2.99; for iOS 6.0 or later; Android 2.1 and up; Wolfram Group LLC)

Sure, Google is smart, but the Wolfram Alpha app takes your random queries to the next level. Wanna know when high tide will be in Aruba tomorrow morning? You got it. Interested in the DNA sequence of a horse? Sure thing. Trying to figure out the derivative of some sin, cos, tangent something or other? (Again, not good at math!) No problem, and this app will even show you the step-by-step solution. If Ken Jennings isn’t available, the Wolfram Alpha app is the next best thing.

4. The Jester App: Heads Up! ($0.99; for iOS 5.0 or later; Android 2.3 and up; Warner Brothers International Enterprises)

Ellen made it famous, but the Heads Up! app can provide you and your friends with hours of side-splitting entertainment. Hold your phone up to your forehead, and use your friends’ clues to guess the name or word on the “card” on your phone screen before the timer runs out. It’s kinda like “The $10,000 Pyramid” for the 21st century.

BONUS! Another Jester App: Guess the ‘90s (Free; for iOS 5.0 or later; Android 2.2 and up; Random Logic Games)

I can’t leave this one off…I love it. I was a teenager in the early ‘90s, so of course I was a slave to pop culture at that time, which is why this app is a hilarious blast from the past. It displays photos of prototypically ‘90s TV shows, bands, movies, even food items, and you have to fill in the blank to guess what it is. From Blossom to Gushers, Hansen to Furbies, any child of the ‘90s can’t help but chuckle at this time-warp-of-an-app.
